Sensory Activities Toddlers Will Love: Sensory Bag Counting

I am super late to the game when it comes to sensory activities toddlers will love, but I must say I am hooked at this point! There are so many different ways to create sensory fun and learning with our toddlers, so today I thought I would talk about an activity that has no mess!

Kids tend to learn with their entire bodies, so I don’t mind a little extra clean up sometimes to allow the learning and development to flow, but this one is super fun as well . Sensory activities for toddlers (such as these ones focusing on the sense of touch) are a very important part of that whole body learning.

They expose children to many new experiences, textures, and materials and can actually be pretty calming.

The set up for this is super easy but takes a few to get all of the supplies prepared. So take a look at how we did this toddler project quick and easy!

Preparation (10-15 minutes)

  1. I prepared this activity ahead of time while the kids were sleeping. I wanted my daughter to have something to play with in the morning while my son was doing virtual kindergarten.
  2. First I taped the white construction paper to the table
  3. Next I filled the sandwich bags with about half a cup of water (you don’t need much!) and I added 1 to 2 drops of dye.
  4. I shook the bags to mix the water color and then added about the same amount of oil.
  5. I then added the pom poms to the bag.
  6. Next I closed the bags with as little air inside as possible. Make the the bags are super SECURE! Tape them if you like so there is no leakage.
  7. Finally I taped the bags down at the top and at the bottom (I used clear tape). This allows for the pom poms to be easily moved!
  8. And their you have it!

Counting and Color Sorting

I chose to make a counting and sorting activity that included colors by adding circled numbers in front of the bags.

This part is certainly open to preference, but I will say my daughter really enjoyed it. She sorted the colors and numbers and then messed them up over and over again 🙂

LOL

And that’s it! I also did one bag as an ocean sensory activity! I added a shark and some sea treasure 🙂
