May Flowers Spring Sensory Activities For Kids

I’m excited to share this activity the kids did earlier today! It has been really fun to search for sensory activities toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy in particular and judging by my kid’s reactions, I think I succeeded. In the spirit of April showers, then May flowers, we decided to do a flower spring sensory activities.

If you don’t have experience with sensory bins, they are usually just a simple a plastic container filled with items and materials specifically chosen to help stimulate a child’s senses, like touch, feel, and sight for example. These sensory activities stimulate a young child’s exploration skills and encourages development in vital areas.

So please enjoy and don’t stop there! Be creative with your bin and check back here for more ideas!

Just an FYI, when using small beans, please supervise your child if they have a tendency to put things in their mouth. Little beans can be a choking hazard for little ones.

Activities like these expose children to many new experiences, textures, and materials and can actually be pretty calming. I notice that the kids play with these types of activities for longer periods of time.

Materials

Preparation (about 10 few minutes)

  1. Grab a container that’s big enough to hold a few pounds of black beans but shallow enough for small kids to enjoy to dig in and have fun.
  2. Grab the beans and slowly pour them in the bin. Be careful because the beads actually bounce a lot LOL. Push that aside
  3. Next have some fun with making the flower stems! The kids enjoyed wrapping them around their little fingers and sticking them in the “flower pot”. The beans will do a good job at keep them in place.
  4. Next have the kids draw and cut out flowers. If your kids are on the younger side, you can prepare the construction paper flowers beforehand. (or help them do the cutting)
  5. Make sure to put little holes in the middle of the flowers!
  6. Next stick the twirled pipe cleaners through the flowers and bend it on the back of the flower so it doesn’t move. Your flower should be able to stand up straight and even move a little when you blow 🙂
  7. Repeat for each stem and flower!
  8. Add spoons, gardening tools, toys, and whatever else you like
